Locals of Malvern may know this space as The Living Room, a popular eating house since 2007, but it’s had a makeover and we here at FoodOnTap approve wholeheartedly, welcome Allium. The owners, on deciding to change it up and evolve after 6 years, brought in Head Chef Mike Harrison whose credo is frankly to ‘make the food yummy’. And that it is. We hear the expression Modern Australian cuisine very often these days, and long may it live if this is the kind of food it inspires.
The seasonal menu is a simple structure for both lunch and dinner – 4 choices across entrees, mains and dessert with a few sides. If your preference leans towards a tasting menu, chef offers a choice of six dishes with matching wines with a very tempting vegetarian option available.
Our lunch picks :
- Spiced lamb shoulder, cracked wheat and roast cauliflower salad – a flavoursome fat stick of long and slow cooked lamb, coated with spices that pop, texture and crunch underneath,
- Tteok, spicy braised eggplant, woodear mushrooms and peanut crumble – punchy vegetable dish with a happy hit on the palate of both sweet and salty. The Korean cuisine train has well and truly arrived at the station and here we discovered tteok, a glutinous steamed rice cake, the perfect marriage.
- Broadbeans, peas and edemame – fresh nuttiness of the greens rounded it all off, and healthy to boot.
- Parsnip parfait, gianduia chocolate, salted caramel and hazelnut crumble – be not afraid, the vegetable component truly lends itself in both texture and flavour to give this dessert a point of difference. It’s delicious.
Pop in for a glass of wine, relax at the bar and sample the bar snack menu if lunch or dinner’s not on the cards, but we do recommend you add Allium on to your eating out bucket list.
