Zut alors, what is happening in Malvern? Take a detour off Glenferrie Road and you will find Alice Wright’s new pitstop for those of us with a penchant for something a little bit French, minus the jetlag.
Step one foot inside the airy and light, modern space, eye the pastries and delicate desserts under the counter and we guarantee any resolve to cut out sugar and carbs that day will disappear. Alice honed her skills at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and clearly passed with flying colours. The seductive display of crisp, golden croissants, salted caramel and choc tarts, apple tart tatins, lemon curd meringues and more will definitely have you ‘at hullo’. You can grab a good Niccolo coffee to go at the street facing window with one of those fabulous treats, but to really appreciate the charm of this relaxed and hospitable eatery, we recommend you find a table or prop at one of the benches and take in brunch or lunch.
Menu choices include some proven favourites including Dr Marty’s Crumpets, plump Ricotta Hotcakes and Free Range Happy Eggs served any way. The bread is from Woodfrog Bakery including their popular pumpkin multigrain – either fresh or toasted – it is delicious in its own right. Dishes we tried :
- Smashed Avocado could now have its own Facebook and Twitter account these days, but Millstone’s version pops with the freshness of finely sliced radish, maple chilli and seeds giving it the edge to set it apart from the rest. We chose roasted tomatoes on the side offering some balance with just the right tart juiciness next to the velvety texture of the avocado.
- Zucchini and Sweet Potato Fritters, light and plump, are served with Meredith goats cheese, housemade beetroot relish and a perfect, runny poached egg.
- Gianduja chocolate & hazelnut entremet is just the right balance of texture and sweetness, you may not choose to share.
- Apple tart tatin is not a traditional tart but as they say in the classics “tell someone who cares”, it is delicious.
Fresh baguettes are available and a soup of the day will warm you up from the inside.
The specials board, refreshed fortnightly, included a beef bourguignon, French onion soup and a variety of tempting seasonal salads. The service is both welcoming and efficient and the price point is very fair.
What we love here is that the wheel is not being reinvented – it doesn’t have to be when the dishes are cooked with skill, respect and a passion for good food using high quality seasonal ingredients and presentation which shines.
