Red Velvet Bars with cream cheese icing

Arianne of “Cakes by Arianne” has provided this delicious decadent recipe, especially for your Valentine.  These cute heart shaped treats are a perfect way to say I Love You….to anyone!

225gr butter
1 1/2 cups caster sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons red food colouring
3 1/2 cups plain flour
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder


Preheat oven to 180c (170c for fan forced)

Cream butter & sugar til light & fluffy (if you think it’s done, beat it a bit more!!). Add eggs, food colouring & vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together & gently stir into wet ingredients.

Grease & line 20cm x 23cm slice tin with baking paper. Leave enough overhang to be able to lift slice out of the tin.

Press dough evenly into tin.

Bake for 20 mins. Set aside to cool down.

Cream cheese icing

500gr cream cheese, softened
100gr butter, softened
2 1/2 cups pure icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract

Cream cream cheese & butter until light & fluffy (very, very important). Gradually beat in icing sugar & vanilla.

Remove slice from tin and spread evenly with icing. Refrigerate until the icing is set. Using a heart shaped cutter (whatever size you like) cut the slice into hearts. Sprinkle with red/white sprinkles or hearts or sanding sugar. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve.
